“…As a sensing platform, the detection limit of 10.7 nM for Hg(II) detection was achieved based on the quenching effect. A paper-based fluorescence sensor with instrument-free signal quantitation was developed for selective detection of Hg(II) by Henry et al [124]. The quantitation results were obtained by calculating the quenching distance on the filter paper after the addition of Hg(II) by simple measurement with a ruler.…”

“…More specifically, carbon dots (CDs) possess many advantageous properties to serve as metal nanosensors, including their chemical versatility, hydrophilicity, photostability and low chemical and cytotoxicity [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Previous works have evidenced excellent CD sensitivity in detecting metals such as Hg 2+ [ 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ], Fe 3+ [ 25 , 26 ] and Pb 2+ [ 27 , 28 ], among others [ 13 , 29 , 30 , 31 ].…”

“…The distance-based approach can also be performed on a cotton thread substrate, which is an alternative material to paper for the fabrication of the fluidic sensor for the analysis of environmental contaminants [ 21 , 22 ]. In addition, by combination with a pre-concentration approach, such as headspace microextraction [ 23 ], solid-phase extraction [ 24 ], and a portable heater [ 25 ], the sensitivity of measurements can be improved. Furthermore, there are several reports of using distance-based applications for clinical diagnosis such as chloride test [ 26 ], potassium [ 27 ], alkaline phosphatase [ 28 ], and cardiac troponin I [ 29 ].…”

“…For the detection of metal ions, the dPADs have also been previously reported using the principle based on the deposition of chemical chelating compounds, such as dithizone [ 30 ] and a synthesized porphyrin [ 31 ]. Interestingly, the growing interest in dPAD application is reflected by the increasing number of publications during recent years, by using several strategies such as G-quadruplex-DNAzyme [ 32 ], starch hydrolysis [ 33 ], ionophore-doped ion-selective nanospheres [ 34 , 35 ], and synthesized fluorescent ligands [ 25 , 36 ].…”
