Sensitive skin: an overview

Abstract: SynopsisSensitive skin is a condition of subjective cutaneous hyper-reactivity to environmental factors. Subjects experiencing this condition report exaggerated reactions when their skin is in contact with cosmetics, soaps and sun screens, and they often report worsening after exposure to dry and cold climate. Although no sign of irritation is commonly detected, itching, burning, stinging and a tight sensation are constantly present. Generally substances that are not commonly considered irritants are involved … Show more

“…The frequencies of adverse events reported in the tea tree oil acne studies are higher than would be expected from patch test studies and are higher than those reported in most other clinical studies evaluating tea tree oil for non-acne conditions [12]. This may be attributed to the relative sensitivity of facial skin [32] compared with other body sites such as the back, which is the site typically used for patch testing. In addition, the base formulation of the products used in the acne studies may have influenced irritancy.…”

“…However, the board members remarked that some medical treatments disrupt skin barrier function. This being particularly problematic in Asian skin, which has been reported to have a higher prevalence and objective skin sensitivity compared with Caucasian skin 36,37. Also, there is an increasing awareness of antibiotic resistance due to many years of inappropriate topical antibiotic use and hence the need to find alternative solutions.…”

“…Lastly, sensitive skin type is a consequence of hyper-reactivity, related with significant intrinsic factors such as dysfunctional vascular reaction and inflammation, leading to flushing and couperose. Moisturizers with anti-inflammatory compounds and/or antioxidants can minimize inflammatory reactions and modulate vascular reactivity [11]. Predominant normal pH of the skin ranges from 4.2 to 5.6 (depending on the specific area of the body), which is slightly acid, and is influenced by the composition of the hydrolipidic film of the stratum corneum [12].…”
