Sensitization to, and allergic contact dermatitis caused by, colophonium in north‐eastern Italy in 1996 to 2016 with a focus on occupational exposures

Abstract: Our study showed that contact allergy to colophonium is still relevant in north-eastern Italy. The frequency of sensitization has dropped significantly over a period of 10 years, but students and farmers/fishermen still have sensitization prevalences above 3.5%. Our results are in line with European data.

“…The North‐Eastern Italian Database has been already described in several publications 17‐22 . From 1996 to 2016, a total of 27 381 patients (age >15 years) with symptoms and/or signs of suspected ACD consulted one of the eight departments of dermatology or occupational medicine comprising the North‐East Italy Contact Dermatitis Group (NEICDG): Trieste, Padua (three clinics), Pordenone, Rovigo, Trento, and Bolzano.…”

“…We highlight this case as colophonium exposure is rather unexpected in a petrochemical industrial environment. 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 Querying the French database of occupational exposure (SOLVEX 4 ) with the activity sector “chemical industry” and the post “storage and transport of materials” retrieved mainly aromatic compounds (“‐arene”), aldehydes and acetylene black. Although colophonium is also an ubiquitous sensitizer in daily life, our patient reported no hobby or activity that made us suspect sensitization in private life.…”

“…23 Colophonium is a natural substance derived from pine trees, and it is used in both unmodified and modified forms as a fast-acting adhesive for industrial, medical, or other commercial uses. 24 Colophonium was found in both glucose sensors and patch pumps. Positive patch test reactions to colophonium were observed in numerous patients wearing diabetes devices containing this substance.…”
