Sensory Dysfunction Following Stroke: Incidence, Significance, Examination, and Intervention

Abstract: Recent studies have provided evidence of the widespread incidence of sensory dysfunction following stroke. The importance of these findings lies in the association between sensory loss poststroke and poorer outcomes in motor capacity, functional abilities, length of inpatient stay, and quality of life. Since literature suggests that clinicians can use information about clients' sensory status to predict rehabilitation outcomes and select appropriate interventions, the accuracy of somatosensory assessment is ex… Show more

“…Sensory assessments in hemiparetic have been performed through somato-sensory evoked potentials 14 or functional scales. Considering the last ones, therapists should consider the validity and reliability of the instruments used in their clinical exams, since there are non-standardized forms of assessing sensitivity, but many of them do not provide and adequate information to assess diagnostics or to monitor the gains resulting from sensory rehabilitation 1,10,11,15 .…”

“…A recent review assessed that thalamic pain subjects received both type of TENS treatment i.e., high frequency and low frequency for about 16 days . They showed the results of pain reduction and improvement of symptoms [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. In such cases physical therapist plays a role in diagnosing the discomfort and provide further relief of pain according to the symptoms and dysfunction.…”
