Sensory Evaluation and Oxidative Stability of a Suncream Formulated with Thermal Spring Waters from Ourense (NW Spain) and Sargassum muticum Extracts

Abstract: Abstract:The purpose of this work was to evaluate four thermal spring waters from Ourense and a Sargassum muticum extract as cosmetic ingredients for the preparation of a suncream. The thermal spring waters were tested for their suitability as an aqueous phase main component, and the algal extract was added as an antioxidant instead of using synthetic preservatives in the cosmetic formula. The emulsion was tested for lipid oxidation during a period of 9 months and for consumer acceptance by performing a sensor… Show more

“…For instance, the treatment with the ethyl acetate fraction (EtOAc) of Sargassum muticum extract evidently augmented the proliferation of dermal papilla cells (DPCs) and decreased the 5α-reductase activity [259]. Moreover, S. muticum extract can be effectively added as antioxidant ingredient in sun cream with well acceptance by consumers [260].…”

“…An important source of these thermal and mineral waters is the Ourense province (Northwest of Spain), whose high thermal flow makes it the second city in Europe. Although a wide range of uses has been acknowledged since ancient times, the therapeutic value of the hot springs in Ourense has attracted increased attention in the last decade (Balboa et al, 2017;Delgado-Outeiriño et al, 2009). Later authors proposed their proper application to formulate sunscreen creams enriched with algal extracts of Sargassum muticum.…”

“…The antioxidant activity of the extracts and samples of the cosmetic emulsion with the addition of extracts was determined by the Oyaizu method (FRAP method) [18] and by the ability of antioxidants to Organoleptic (appearance, color, odor), physical and chemical properties (colloidal and thermal stability, pH) samples of cosmetic emulsion were determined according to literature [19][20][21] .…”
