Septic Lateral Sinus Thrombosis: Sinus Exploration Is Unnecessary

Abstract: The algorithm of treatment of septic lateral sinus thrombosis (SLST) has undergone a paradigm shift with the understanding of the natural history of sigmoid sinus thrombosis. Thus, the recent medical literature promulgates the management of these cases with no sinus exploration. However, in view of marked paucity of literature on the cited subject, not much is known about this form of treatment. We present our experience of treating two paediatric cases of SLST with mastoid surgery and no sinus exploration: bo… Show more

“…This finding is consistent with those of other studies, which posit that infection is thrombogenic and likely protective against bacteremia. [65][66][67] Our results demonstrated a significant, positive association between AC and sinus recanalization. This is in accord with other results, including Moharir et al 68 Our results also mirrored those of Coutinho et al 69 Their Cochrane systematic review describes two randomized controlled trials from 1991 to 1999 investigating the role of heparin versus placebo in the management of nonexclusively otogenic sigmoid sinus thrombosis.…”

“…Transverse or lateral CVST secondary to otitis media is an uncommon complication in children 2,3 and rarer in adults. 4 This case of chronic otitis media in a pregnant adolescent evolved to mastoiditis and septic CVST.…”
