Sequence analysis of the genome of Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus.

Abstract: The genome of the nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) (T3 strain) pathogenic for Bombyx mori (Bm) was sequenced and analysed. The BmNPV genome was 128 413 nucleotides long with a GMC content of 40 % and contained 136 open reading frames (ORFs) encoding predicted proteins of over 60 amino acids. Although phenotypically different, the genome organizations of BmNPV and Autographa californica multinucleocapsid NPV (AcMNPV) were closely related. The BmNPV genome was over 90 % identical to about three-quarters of the genome … Show more

“…This is similar to the 24/30 matches for the BmNPV (Gomi et al, 1999) and OpMNPV (Ahrens et al, 1997) palindrome sequence, and the 26/30 matches for the AcMNPV (Ayres et al, 1994) palindrome consensus (Fig. 3a).…”

“…The apparent size of the MaviNPV genome (111.95 kbp in this study) is smaller than that of AcMNPV (133.9 kbp) (Ayres et al, 1994) and BmNPV (128.4 kbp) (Gomi et al, 1999). Based on the sequences of 29 baculoviral core genes in phylogenetic analyses in this study, MaviNPV belongs to group I NPVs and is closely related to AcMNPV and BmNPV.…”

“…To avoid the influence of viral infection, we designed a cross way to study the function of Bm-svv, using incubation of baculovirus with non-permissive cell lines. Although BmNPV and AcNPV have approximately 93 % similarity to the amino acid sequence with each other (Gomi et al 1999), AcNPV infects Sf 9 and Tn 5 cells, but not BmN cells and it induces Spli cell apoptosis (Hink 1970;Chejanovsky and Gershburg 1995). However, BmNPV only can infect BmN cells, but not Sf 9, Tn 5, and Spli cells.…”

“…Recent nucleotide sequence analyses of B. mori NPV (BmNPV) have found that its ORFs show approximately 93 % similarity to the amino acid sequence of AcNPV (Gomi et al 1999). Although these genes exhibit a close relationship, they present significant differences in host range.…”
