Abstract.A structural analysis has been carried out along the southeast margin of the Chambishi-Nkana Basin in the Central African Copperbelt, hosting the world-class Cu-Co Nkana orebody. The geometrically complex structural architecture is interpreted to have been generated during a single NE-SW oriented compressional event, clearly linked to the Pan-African Lufilian orogeny. This progressive deformation resulted primarily in asymmetric multiscale parasitic fold assemblages, 5 characterized by non-cylindrical NW-SE elongated, periclinal folds that strongly interfere laterally, leading to fold linkage and bifurcation. The vergence and amplitude of these folds consistently reflect their position along an inclined limb of a NW plunging megascale first-order fold. A clear relation is observed between development of parasitic folds and certain lithofacies assemblages in the Copperbelt Orebody Member, which hosts most of the ore. Differences in fold amplitude, wavelength and shape are explained by changes in mechanical stratigraphy caused by lateral lithofacies variation in ore-bearing horizons. In 10 addition, strong differences in strain partitioning occur within the deforming basin, which is interpreted to be in part controlled by changes in mechanical anisotropy in the layered rock package. This work provides an essential backdrop to understand the influence of the Lufilian orogeny on metal mineralization and (re−)mobilization in the Copperbelt.

Zambia Copperbelt hosts numerous world‐class, high‐grade sediment‐hosted stratiform Cu deposits. The Lower Roan Group of the Katanga Supergroup is the main ore host and mainly comprises clastic rocks. In this study, we conducted laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry detrital zircon dating on the sedimentary rocks of the Lower Roan Group in the Chambishi Basin, in order to investigate the Neoproterozoic rift evolution of the Congo Craton. Our results reveal that the main zircon age population (97.1%) falls within 2.1–1.7 Ga (peaks at 1.95 and 1.88 Ga), and minor age populations fall into the Archaean (2.7–2.4 Ga), Palaeoproterozoic (2.3–2.1 Ga), and Mesoproterozoic (1.5–1.05 Ga). Detrital zircons from the Lower Roan Group have distinct oscillatory zoning in cathodoluminescence images, high Th/U ratios (mostly 0.5–2.0), and are sub‐angular, suggesting close detrital provenance. Provenance of the Lower Roan group may have been mainly the Lufubu Metamorphic Complex, Bangweulu Block, and Muva Supergroup, and minor the nearby granitoids of the Irumide Belt. The south‐eastern Congo Craton likely underwent two Neoproterozoic rifting events: the first rift cycle lasted from 880 to 820 Ma when the Lower Roan and Upper Roan groups were deposited in the Roan Basin. After an uplift, the Mwashia, Nguba, and Kundelungu groups of the Katanga Supergroup were likely deposited during the second rift basin development (765–635 Ma). The similar detrital zircon age spectra suggested that the Mwashia Group may have derived from the Lower Roan Group.

In this study, we present new field geology, whole-rock geochemical and S-Pb isotope data for the Chambishi deposit in the Zambia Copperbelt (ZCB), in order to constrain the mineralization process and ore sulphur and metal source. The Lower Roan Subgroup clastic rocks are compositionally similar to the Post-Archean Australian Shale and have low Chemical Index of Alteration, indicating a felsic and slightly weathered source, which we proposed to be the felsic Lufubu Metamorphic Complex (LMC). The Th, Ti, and Zr elemental features suggest that the Lower Roan Subgroup was deposited in a rift basin of passive margin. The 34 S values of early-stage diagenetic Cu-Co sulphide (−6.2 to +6.6‰, Vienna Canyon Diablo Troilite [V-CDT]) from the nodular and layered ores are lower than those of the late-stage vein-type hydrothermal Cu-Co sulphides and disseminated molybdenites (3.9-11.9‰, V-CDT), indicating different sulphur precipitation mechanism in the two mineralization stages. Integrated with previous fluid inclusion studies, we suggest that the sulphur for the diagenetic sulphides was from bacterial reduction of sedimentary anhydrite and seawater sulphates, whereas that for the orogenic-stage sulphides was from both diagenetic sulphide remobilization and from thermochemical sulphate reduction. The mean 238 U/ 204 Pb ratios of the diagenetic-and orogenic-stage sulphides are 10.21 and 10.44, respectively, overlapping with those of the average Lufubu schist (10.38) and the Mufulira granodiorite (10.21), and suggest the LMC as the main ore metal source.
