Sequence-definition in stiff conjugated oligomers

Abstract: The concept of sequence-definition in the sense of polymer chemistry is introduced to conjugated, rod-like oligo(phenylene ethynylene)s via an iterative synthesis procedure. Specifically, monodisperse sequence-defined trimers and pentamers were prepared via iterative Sonogashira cross-coupling and deprotection. The reaction procedure was extended to tetra- and pentamers for the first time yielding a monodisperse pentamer with 18% and a sequence-defined pentamer with 3.2% overall yield. Furthermore, three novel… Show more

“…For the interested reader, three minor notes regarding the steady-state absorption and emission spectra are made. Firstly, we note that the absorption and emission data for the OPE compounds were previously published Schneider et al (2018), but reproduced here due to their relevance to the discussion of the new observations. Secondly, we point out that our measurements are made using chloroform as a solvent rather than toluene (commonly used for 4CzIPN) because the TADF was more intense for our molecules in chloroform.…”

“…Compared to the cyano group, the oxadiazole is a weaker acceptor (Wong et al, 2018). Monodisperse OPEs of varying length were previously synthesized through the use of sequence-defined routes Schneider et al (2018). Herein the OPE monomer, trimer, and pentamer were coupled to T (forming the T-oligomers T1, T3, and T5, respectively).…”

“…For example, the group of M.A.R. Meier established a solution synthesis protocol for sequence-ordered, uniform pentamers built from five different monomers [12]. The oligomers were synthesized by Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction followed by deprotection ( Fig.…”

“…Among conjugated macromolecules, oligo(arylene ethynylene)s (OArEs) have gained considerable attention due to their excellent optoelectronic properties and emerging applications [31][32][33][34]. The current synthesis methods provide access to uniform OArEs of precise length and full sequence control [6,12,35]. OArEs are an important class of sensory materials [26,30,36,37].…”
