Serological comparison and haemagglutinating activity ofMycoplasma dispar

Abstract: SUMMARYA comparison of twelve strains of Mycoplasma dispar by the metabolism inhibition and indirect haemagglutination tests has shown them to form a serologically homogeneous group of micro-organisms. The twelve strains vary in their haemagglutinating activity against erythrocytes from different animal species, and certain of the strains can be distinguished by the erythrocytes they agglutinate. Haemagglutination may thus provide a method by which certain strains can be typed. The erythrocyte receptor site do… Show more

“…The strains of M. dispar, M. verecundum and Acholeplasma laidlawii listed in table 1 have also been described previously (Howard, Gourlay & Collins, 1974;Gourlay & Wyld, 1972;Gourlay, Leach & Howard, 1974). M. bovirhinis strains OIOC and PG43 were previously described ; strains C56R and C155 were obtained from Dr Carmichael (Langer & Carmichael, 1963, strains 56R and 155) and purified as for the other strains .…”

“…The description of a cryptic receptor on the erythrocytes was suggested in that study. Trypsin treatment of M. dlspar reduced hem agglutination titers for bovine and sheep erythrocytes but not for rabbit erythrocytes (30). Earlier work distinguishing M. pneumoniae from other human mycoplasmas utilized the hemadsorption activity.…”

“…pneumoniae attachment to human lung fibroblasts was reduced following the removal of sialic acid from the later tissue (18 were differentiated by the erythrocyte species agglutinated (30). The correlation between these three properties Is still unclear, although earlier assumptions considered hemadsorption and hemagglutination to be a similar property (20).…”
