Serological Response to Pasteurella multocida NanH Sialidase in Persistently Colonized Rabbits

Abstract: Pasteurella multocida is a mucosal pathogen that colonizes the upper respiratory system of rabbits. Respiratory infections can result, but the bacteria can also invade the circulatory system, producing abscesses or septicemia. P. multocida produces extracellular sialidase activity, which is believed to augment colonization of the respiratory tract and the production of lesions in an active infection. Previously, it was demonstrated that some isolates of P. multocida contain two unique sialidase genes, nanH and… Show more

“…Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is a microbe, which occurs naturally in the respiratory tract of some animal species; however, it can be a virulent pathogen that infects other animal hosts [ 1 ]. Pasteurellosis is a disease that affects rabbits, characterized by rhinitis, pneumonia, orchitis, otitis media, septicemia, and abscess formation [ 2 ]; however, infection with P. multocida may be asymptomatic [ 3 ].…”

“…Pasteurella multocida , a virulent and readily transmitted coccobacillus, is one of the most significant bacterial diseases of rabbits and causes considerable economic losses in large production units world-wide [ 3 , 4 ]. Clinical signs in rabbits include rhinitis with purulent nasal discharge, pneumonia, otitis media, pyometra, orchitis, abscesses, oculoconjunctivitis, and septicaemia [ 5 , 6 ]; although infection may also be asymptomatic [ 7 ]. Of the 5 serogroups, serogroup A and to a lesser extent serogroup D strains are considered to be causative agents of pasteurellosis in rabbits [ 8 ].…”

“…Prior to the study, swabs of ear lesions were cultured for possible bacterial infections ( n = 42). These swab samples were streaked onto both selective (Knight's and Avril's agar) and nonselective (blood and chocolate) agars for microbiological culturing, especially for Pasteurella multocida 14 . Bacterial cultures revealed no growth.…”
