Serotonin, neural markers, and memory

Abstract: Diverse neuropsychiatric disorders present dysfunctional memory and no effective treatment exits for them; likely as result of the absence of neural markers associated to memory. Neurotransmitter systems and signaling pathways have been implicated in memory and dysfunctional memory; however, their role is poorly understood. Hence, neural markers and cerebral functions and dysfunctions are revised. To our knowledge no previous systematic works have been published addressing these issues. The interactions among … Show more

“…In addition, knowledge gained from neuroimaging studies (Binder and Desai, 2011), as well as knowledge of the neural markers associated with memory (Meneses, 2015), will likely play a key role in future models of memory mechanisms, but in this review, as stated above, we focus mainly on neuroanatomical, neurophysiological, and psychological mechanisms.…”

“…Recent evidence suggests that the serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] system encompassing 14 subtypes of 5-HT receptors not only plays a key role in the regulation of mood, affect, learning, and memory (2,9,10), but is also implicated in social cognition (11,12). Psilocybin [4-phosphoryloxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (Psi)] is a serotonergic hallucinogen that induces an altered state of consciousness characterized by changes in sensory perception, emotion, thought, and the sense of self in a dose-dependent manner (13).…”

“…Furthermore, 5HT 1A -knockout mice exhibit increased stress responses (Klemenhagen et al 2006). Additionally, numerous studies using agonists and/or antagonists of 5-HT 1A/1B , 5-HT 2A/2C , 5-HT 3 , 5-HT 4 , 5-HT 6 , and 5-HT 7 receptors have illustrated their promnesic and/or antiamnesic effects (Meneses 2015). Therefore, it seems likely that diverse 5-HT receptors are involved in the pathophysiological mechanisms of PTSD.…”
