Serum and seminal plasma prolactin levels in male attenders of an infertility clinic in Ibadan

Abstract: Serum and seminal plasma prolactin and testosterone were studied in 51 healthy-looking men who presented at the infertility clinic. They included 20 men with normospermia, 20 with oligospermia and 11 with azoospermia. The mean serum prolactin and gonadotrophin levels of the oligospermics and azoospermics were similar but significantly higher than those of the normospermics. The mean seminal plasma prolactin levels in the three groups were similar. The mean serum testosterone of the azoospermics was significant… Show more

“…Adamopoulos et al (34) suggested that raised serum FSH concentration in these cases signified damaged tubular epithelium probably related to the varicocele. In addition, varicocele-associated cases had significant higher mean serum PRL levels than fertile controls, a finding similar to that reported by Arowojolu et al (35). Odell and Larsen (36) pointed that high serum PRL may inhibit LH action on interstitial cells and alter gonadal reaction to gonadotrophin.…”

“…In horse seminal plasma, the osteopontin (OPN) protein is positively associated with fertility (72 kDa) [17]. Male infertility is significantly associated with raised seminal plasma testosterone [18,19].…”

“…Prolactin is a polypeptide hormone, an essential factor for male reproduction secreted by lactotrophs [56]. Treating prolactin elevation causes an affirmative metabolic effect on the patient, namely controlling glycemic content and other metabolic parameters [57].…”

“…A polypeptide hormone prolactin is produced by the lactotrophs, a specialized cell of the anterior pituitary gland. Other than lactation during reproduction, it plays an important role in many homeostatic roles [56]. Transmembrane prolactin receptor (PRL-R)is involved in prolactin signaling which is expressed in a wide range of tissues [75].…”
