Serum Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin as A Sensitive Marker in Diagnosing Alcohol Abuse: A Case – Control Study

Abstract: Background: Alcoholism is a major problem in India thereby causing a heavy toll on the health related expenditure of the country. Detection of alcohol abuse rely mainly on clinical details which is sometimes inaccurate or unreliable and hence using a specific diagnostic parameter might be of immense use not only for early diagnosis but also during follow up of the cases. Aims and Objectives:This case control study aimed at evaluating the usefulness of Carbohydrate Deficient Transferrin (CDT) as a sensitive mar… Show more

“…Other common hematologic findings include anemia, macrocytosis, leucopenia, lymphocytopenia, and thrombocytopenia (Bell et al, 1994;Mundle et al, 2000;Mathurin et al, 2002;Nguyen-Khac et al, 2011). Recently described biomarkers for chronic alcohol use can aid the diagnosis of AH (Anton and Moak, 1994;Berlakovich et al, 2004;Hock et al, 2005;Hietala et al, 2006;Niemela, 2007;Madhubala et al, 2013).…”

“…Furthermore, there were no significant differences between subjects or between groups over time in small samples of healthy male social drinker volunteers receiving 20, 40, 60 or 80 g alcohol/day over a 21 day period, suggesting that CDT is not a good marker for short-term alcohol consumption, even at 80 g/day [ 203 ]. Results of recent studies correlating CDT with alcohol consumption patterns are shown in Table 4 [ 77 , 90 , 93 , 102 , 105 , 147 , 157 , 158 , 166 , 191 , 204 , 205 , 206 , 207 , 208 , 209 , 210 , 211 , 212 , 213 , 214 ].…”

“…Raman spectra of Zinc sulphate doped LTDP crystal recorded at room temperature using a Nicolet 5700 spectrometer with NXP FT-Raman module was used ( number of scans ; 256, laser power at sample: 0.44w, resolution: 4 cm -1 spectral range : 4000-150 cm -1 ). The wave number ranges from 0 to 3500 cm -1 and assignment for the modes is made on the basis of Raman vibrations in some similar complex molecules [7,8] . The peak at 2047 cm -1 shows N=C= S stretching vibrations.…”
