“…CK in the isoforms of CK-MM and CK-MB have been widely studied for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction 22 , but less is known about CK-BB disease relevance. In concordance with our results, CK-BB has been well reported to immediately increase in blood circulation and CSF following acute cerebral injuries, including cerebrovascular traumatisms, meningitis and strokes 23 – 25 , and its role as a plausible diagnostic biomarker for ischemic stroke has been previously postulated 26 , 27 . CK-BB provenance has been slightly controversial; some studies have proven that astrocytes and neurons are the main CK-BB source, whereas others, including us, could only proof that astrocytes express CK-BB in brain 28 .…”

“…The brain type creatine kinase is the predominant form in the brain, but it is present in smaller quantities in other tissues mixed with the MM and MB isoenzymes [10][11]. Pfeiffer et al [7] reported the peak within 24 hours of clinical onset as a reflection of tissue destruction in cerebral infarction; Phillips et al [13] observed the highest level after 48 hours, possibly when hypoxic cells developed structural changes due to "maturation" of ischemia. Increased BBCK CSF concentration was found in various other neurologic diseases, but the level does not appear elevated in the case of inactive, chronic or degenerative disease [6].…”

“…With any destructive process of these tissues, the enzyme leaks into extra cellular fluids and then into body fluids [10]. Hence, accurate separation and measurement of these isoenzymes in serum has become more important in the diagnosis and prognosis of neurological diseases [13]. Oxidative modification of brain proteins may disturb neuronal functions by Author for correspondence: Jagadeesan Arunakaran, Department of Endocrinology, University of Madras, Chennai, India (e-mail j_arunakaran@hotmail.com).…”
