Serum ferritin in relation to the course of Hodgkin's disease

Abstract: Serum levels of patients with Hodgkin's disease were evaluated during the course of the disease. Significant correlations were seen in relation to the stage of the disease, to sex and to various hematological data. An increase of Fer levels during progression and a decrease during remission was observed. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms are discussed. Cancer 52:2308‐2312, 1983.

“…In recent years, ferritin has been found to be synthesized and secreted by several entity malignant tumors, thus it may be considered an auxiliary diagnostic criterion for malignant tumors. Early literature suggests that the serum ferritin level in patients with leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and colon carcinoma markedly increases and is correlated with the degree of the disease (37,38). In our study, the specificity of ferritin in healthy volunteers was high with the false-positive ratio, reaching only 2.9% (Table III).…”

“…5,6 Elevated serum ferritin also has been used as a harbinger of tissue masses including ovarian carcinoma, 7 Hodgkin disease, 8 renal cell carcinoma, 9 and melanoma, 10 and preterm deliveries. 11,12 Ferritin has been linked to insulin resistance [13][14][15] and, controversially, to atherosclerosis.…”

“…Serum ferritin levels have been reported to be elevated in HL patients, in particular in advanced stages and during disease progression [16,17]. Moreover, it has been proposed that the release of IL-6 stimulates the overproduction of hepcidin in the liver, which correlates with the iron restriction and contributes to anemia in HL [18].…”
