Serum Galectin-3 Is Elevated in Obesity and Negatively Correlates with Glycosylated Hemoglobin in Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract: Systemic galectin-3 is elevated in obesity and negatively correlates with glycated hemoglobin in T2D patients, pointing to a modifying function of galectin-3 in human metabolic diseases.

“…Furthermore, increased plasma galectin-3 levels have been reported in (metastasized) cancer [4,5,13,14,[28][29][30]], Behçet's disease [7] and obesity [8], and galectin-3 levels may even guide therapy [14]. We hypothesize that deleterious signals that precede overt disease initiate subclinical tissue changes associated with galectin-3 activation and secretion.…”

“…In addition, galectin-3 plays a systemic role in inflammatory and proliferation responses [1][2][3][4]. In line with this, galectins have been implicated in various diseases, particularly in cancer [5,6], immunological disorders [3,4,7] and common multifactor cardiovascular (CV) disease such as obesity [8] and heart failure (HF) [9].…”

“…Moreover, galectin-3 levels were found to be higher in subjects with obesity or type 2 diabetes [40] and a cross-sectional survey showed that high galectin-3 values were associated with micro-and macrovascular complications in diabetic patients [41]. Thus, the higher galectin-3 levels in diabetic individuals and in general in those with dysmetabolic disorders might mark the increased susceptibility of these subjects toward heart failure, though longitudinal studies of adequate size and duration specifically testing this hypothesis are needed.…”

“…However, the role of Gal-3 in type 2 diabetes remains incompletely understood. The Gal-3 levels are increased in the sera of obese subjects and negatively correlate with the levels of glycosylated haemoglobin (24). In contrast with these data, Okhura et al reported that low serum Gal-3 levels are associated with insulin resistance and T2DM (25).…”

“…Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a β-galactoside-binding lectin that is expressed in different tissues and cells and plays an important role in obesity, T2DM and inflammation (17,18,19). Gal-3 regulates inflammation and adipogenesis, and this lectin is expressed in adipocytes and infiltrating immune cells in the adipose tissue (20).…”
