Serum Leptin as an Indicator of Fat Levels in White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the Southeastern USA

Abstract: Leptin is a hormone that plays a key role in regulating energy intake, appetite, and metabolism. In some mammals, leptin has been shown to circulate at levels proportional to body fat, which could make it useful for nonlethal evaluation of body condition. Leptin's usefulness for estimating fat levels (i.e., body condition) of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) is unknown. We quantified serum leptin concentrations in a sample of free-ranging, female deer collected in July 2008 and March 2009 from coasta… Show more

“…Leptin has been investigated in relation to adiposity in other wildlife species, with conflicting results. Leptin is correlated with adiposity in black bears ( Ursus americanus ) ( Spady et al , 2009 ), but not white-tailed deer ( Odocoilieus viriginianus ) ( Chitwood et al , 2014 ). Further work should be done to determine the general utility of leptin as a marker for adiposity in wildlife.…”
