Serum microRNA expression profiling in patients with multiple system atrophy

Abstract: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a sporadic neurodegenerative disease that is pathologically characterized by α-synuclein positive glial cytoplasmic inclusions in oligodendrocytes. The clinical diagnosis of MSA is often challenging as there are no established biomarkers and diagnoses are now based on clinical findings alone. At present, the etiology and pathogenesis of MSA are unclear. It has been reported that dysregulation of microRNA (miRNA/miR) serves an important role in neurodegenerative disorders includ… Show more

“…Kume and colleagues investigated serum of 10 MSA patients and 6 controls. Microarray analysis showed the up-regulation of 50 miRNAs in MSA patients, whereas 17 miRNAs were significantly decreased ( Kume et al, 2017 ). Again, miR-223, and miR-24 were found to be up-regulated, but qRT-PCR validation of the most regulated miRNAs (miR-223 and miR-16) showed negative results.…”

“…Recently, the obvious change of several miRNAs with high expression in muscle has been identified and detected in plasma and serum during the process of muscle disorders [ 54 ]. Serum miRNAs may come from the active secretion process of histiocytes, while mature miRNAs are coated with lipids or lipoproteins to form exosomes and secrete into blood.…”

“…The level of miR-24 expression is dysregulated in the serum of patients with MSA [202,203]. Interestingly, miR-24 binds to the 3 -UTR of Per2 and plays an important post-transcriptional regulatory role in the PER2 expression required for normal circadian timekeeping, as described above.…”
