Serum Omentin 1 Level Is Associated With Coronary Artery Disease and Its Severity in Postmenopausal Women

Abstract: We evaluated whether serum omentin levels are associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) and its severity among postmenopausal women. We enrolled 193 consecutive postmenopausal women who had undergone coronary angiography for suspected stable CAD. The study population was divided into 2 groups based on the results of coronary angiography (CAD group, n=110 and control group, n=83). Omentin 1 levels were measured and disease severity was assessed using the SYNTAX score (SS) in the CAD group. Those patients wi… Show more

“…In postmenopausal women who had undergone coronary angiography, patients with angiographic CAD had significantly decreased omentin-1 levels, compared to those without CAD (ref. 7 ). Similarly, older males, mean age 63 years with CAD had markedly lower plasma levels of omentin-1 than control subjects 8 .…”

“…Omentin-1 is also an adipokine with anti-inflammatory effects that has been associated with different metabolic disorders 6 . Recent studies have shown that omentin-1 values were decreased in older men and women with coronary artery disease 7,8 . However, the role of omentin-1 in the pathophysiology of coronary artery disease and its early manifestation in younger people is not well defined.…”

“…Several cross-sectional studies further reported that omentin levels are inversely associated with insulin resistance (assessed as homeostasis model assessmentestimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR)) (7, 8,11,12,13,14) and decreased in individuals with impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), or type 2 diabetes (8,11,12,14,15,16). Such an inverse association may be explained by the anti-inflammatory properties of omentin that have been observed in in vitro studies on endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells (17,18,19).…”
