Serum Vaspin Concentration in Elderly Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients with Differing Body Mass Index: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract: Aims. This study was to evaluate the association of serum vaspin concentrations with body mass index (BMI) among elderly patients (>60 years old). Methods. A total of 227 elderly individuals included 76 healthy with normal glucose tolerance, which divided into normal weight control (BMI < 25, n = 38) and overweight or obese control (BMI ≥ 25, n = 38) subgroups, and 150 T2DM patients, which divided into normal weight diabetes (BMI < 25, n = 55), overweight diabetes (30 > BMI ≥ 25, n = 52), and obese diabetes (B… Show more

“…Vaspin a novel adipocytokine, visceral adipose tissue-derived serine protease inhibitor with insulin-sensitizing effects, may improve the metabolism of glucose, lipids and decrease glucose concentration (18). as well as plays inhibitory roles against inflammation in vascular smooth muscle (19) . However, the overall impact of vaspin on glucose dysregulation in humans is not fully known.…”

“…Vaspin has also been reported to be associated with insulin regulation and the development of DM, and it has been noted as potential novel biomarker of the early prediction or diagnosis of certain diabetes types [ 26 , 27 ]. Furthermore, a clinical trial identified vaspin levels to be associated with compensatory mechanisms for high BMI and insulin resistance in elderly participants [ 28 ]. Hence, baseline characteristics might affect vaspin levels individually or synergistically.…”
