Serum vitamin D is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in Chinese males with normal weight and liver enzymes

Abstract: Aim: Considering the characterization of vitamin D deficiency as a risk factor of ectopic fat deposition, the association of serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D 3 [25(OH)D 3 ] levels with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) was evaluated in Chinese men with normal body mass index (BMI) and enzyme markers of liver function. Methods: A total of 514 participants (22 to 79 years old) with normal BMI and liver enzymes were identified for analysis. Abdominal ultrasound was performed to diagnose NAFLD, and the fatty liv… Show more

“…We previously demonstrated that serum vitamin D levels were much lower in patients with NAFLD than in patients without NAFLD. In our previous study, serum 25(OH)D 3 levels were inversely correlated with NAFLD in 514 Chinese men with normal total body fat and liver enzymes . Moreover, a strong association between serum 25(OH)D 3 levels and NAFLD was found by our study team in 451 Chinese postmenopausal women .…”

“…Furthermore, studies with biopsy‐diagnosed NAFLD, a gold standard in NAFLD diagnosis, demonstrated a protective effect of vitamin D against NAFLD . Moreover, previous research from our group has demonstrated an association between vitamin D levels, visceral fat and NAFLD in men …”

“…11,12 Moreover, previous research from our group has demonstrated an association between vitamin D levels, visceral fat and NAFLD in men. 13,14 Both gender and menopausal status are primary influencing factors for vitamin D levels. However, little research has been performed to evaluate the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and both abdominal obesity and NAFLD in Chinese postmenopausal women.…”
