Severe Human Psittacosis Requiring Artificial Ventilation: Case Report and Review

Abstract: Severe respiratory failure is an uncommon manifestation of psittacosis. We describe a patient with psittacosis who developed severe respiratory failure and required artificial ventilation. We also review 11 cases reported in the English-language literature over the past 30 years. A history of exposure to birds was reported in 10 of 12 cases and remains the most significant risk factor. Severe hypoxemia or renal impairment was associated with a poor prognosis. Eight patients died of psittacosis or related compl… Show more

“…The radiographic findings usually show infiltrates in the lungs and breathing difficulties may develop (Gherman et al, 1995;Heddema et al, 2003;Kovacova et al, 2007;Soni et al, 1999;Verweij et al, 1995). In the first case, the family physician started an ineffective empiric therapy with amoxicillin; in the second case, no antibiotics were prescribed.…”

“…Psittacosis causing severe respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation is uncommon and fatal cases are rare (Kovacova et al, 2007;Soni et al, 1999;Verweij et al, 1995). However, in both cases, mechanical ventilation Fatal psittacosis became necessary after progressive dyspnoea and hypoxia developed and, despite intensive care treatment, the patients died.…”

“…Acute psittacosis cases, some with fatal outcomes, have been described in the literature (Verweij et al, 1995;Petrovay & Balla, 2008;Fraeyman et al, 2010;Raso et al, 2014). However, these cases are most likely the tip of the iceberg.…”

“…O agente causal da psitacose é a Chlamydia psittaci, germe gram-negativo, hospedeiro intracelular obrigató-rio (6)(7)(8)(9) . A transmissão para humanos dá-se através do con- tato com pássaros, o qual é relatado em até 85% dos casos.…”
