The occurrence of lymphoblasts in peripheral blood was studied with tritiated thymidine labelling during cutaneous drug hypersensitivity reactions and after provocation tests with drugs suspected to be the causative agents. During the first few days after exanthematous reactions due to sulfonamides and several other drugs, the number of lymphoblasts increased markedly. No significant lymphoblast response could be demonstrated in urticaria or Lyell’s syndrome. In most clinically positive provocation tests with sulfonamides and some other drugs, an increase in blood lymphoblasts was observed 5–7 days after the test dose. Differential counting of the labelled cells was necessary for evaluation of results, since many of the patients were being treated with corticosteroids which caused proliferating myeloid cells to appear in the blood.
