Sex Differences in HIV Prevalence, Behavioral Risks and Prevention Needs Among Anglophone and Francophone Sub-Saharan African Migrants Living in Rabat, Morocco

Abstract: Morocco has experienced a dramatic increase of migration from sub-Sahara Africa during the past decade. Recently included among the most vulnerable populations cited in the Morocco National Strategic Plans on HIV/TB for 2012-2016, sub-Saharan Africa migrants living in an irregular administrative situation participated in a survey to provide baseline data about their socio-demographic, sexual and HIV testing behaviors and HIV and syphilis prevalence. “…In 2009, this region recorded the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the country (0.9%) [10]. Since then, few studies have been carried out in the area [9, 17, 21, 23-28]; most of them were especially focused on groups that carried a high-risk (female sex workers, men who have sex with men, drug users) [9, 17, 23]. These groups were the main population studied in relation to HIV epidemic in Morocco and elsewhere in the world, with heterosexual sex-worker networks being the largest of the three kinds of high-risk groups, followed by MSM, and then IDUs [10].…”

“…Each stage of the disease is associated with particular symptoms [12]. The overall incidence of syphilis in the world have increased in recent years [13-15], partially due to its association with HIV infection [16]; in particular high-risk groups of the population, including drug users (IDUs), female sex workers (FSWs) and men who have sex with men (MSM) [17-19]. The HIV is still a common causes of morbidity and mortality around the world, particularly in the developing countries [20, 21].…”

“…The researchers used the interview data to estimate the prevalence of HIV risk, testing behaviors, and healthcare use in the population (Montealegre et al, 2012a,b; Montealegre and Selwyn, 2014). Multiple other studies have been conducted using RDS to recruit and conduct research among migrant populations (Johnston et al, 2016b; Tyldum and Johnston, 2014). Consistent with these RDS studies, our results indicated that RDS is a suitable methodology for studying refugees, migrants, and similar types of populations.…”
