Sex Differences in the Association of HOMA-IR Index and BDNF in Han Chinese Patients With Chronic Schizophrenia

Abstract: Background: Previous research has indicated that there are significant sex differences in serum BDNF levels and metabolic indicators in patients with schizophrenia. Studies have found that BDNF is involved in blood sugar regulation. Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) is currently a sensitive indicator for measuring insulin resistance. Our study aims to explore the sex differences in the relationship between serum BDNF levels and HOMA-IR in patients with chronic schizophrenia (CS).Meth… Show more

“…Previous literature indicated that insulin levels were increased in schizophrenic patients compared to the healthy population ( 48 , 49 ) and were positively related to leptin levels in the early course of the illness ( 31 ). During the treatment of schizophrenia, leptin levels and insulin levels were also positively correlated ( 37 , 50 ).…”

“…E.g., in one study, BDNF levels were shown to be negatively correlated with body mass index (BMI) gain in female patients but not in male patients (133). This was supported by another study, showing that decreased BDNF serum levels were associated with weight gain in female schizophrenia patients receiving long-term antipsychotic treatment (134). In this study, in 332 patients suffering from chronic schizophrenia treated with APDs, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and BDNF are associated in a differential manner according to.…”

“…In this study, in 332 patients suffering from chronic schizophrenia treated with APDs, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and BDNF are associated in a differential manner according to. Hence, it is important to consider gender when measuring BDNF levels in patients with schizophrenia and metabolic indicators ( 134 ).…”

“…Several surrogate estimates have been proposed for assessing insulin sensitivity, including HOMA-IR, HOMA-β, and QUICKI [ 20 , 21 ]. However, the threshold of HOMA-IR for evaluating insulin resistance has not been unified because of various associated factors of HOMA-IR, including age, sex, race, and weight [ 22 , 23 , 24 ]. HOMA-IR is strongly correlated with body weight as there is a significant difference in HOMA-IR between normal weight and obese individuals [ 25 ].…”

“…However, HOMA-IR may be affected by race, and the participants of these previous studies were all Caucasians [ 23 ]. Several published studies have investigated HOMA-IR in Asian populations and determined the average HOMA-IR in healthy males and females [ 22 , 30 , 31 ]. To date, there is no study focused on the relationship between HOMA-IR and body weight in pregnant women.…”
