Sex differences in the radial grooves in the first extensor compartment

Abstract: We observed two tendon groove morphologies for the first extensor compartment. A groove with a bony ridge occurs more frequently in females. Further research is needed to clarify the relationship between the high frequency of a bony ridge and increased prevalence of de Quervain tenosynovitis in females.

“…This may also be one of the reasons why radial stenosis tenosynovitis is more prevalent in women. 28 The study still has limitations. First, due to the limitation of the number of specimens and its conditions, there is the different water content between two groups, which may affect the results of the operation.…”

“…Also, the existence of a septum within the compartment causes the condition and determines the success of the treatment (14,19,(22)(23)(24). Several studies have been carried out to determine the prevalence of these variations (3,25,26); nonetheless, none evaluated the Iranian population.…”

“…The lack of a gender differential of septation in our study supports the premise of others suggesting that additional factors, such as variations in bony morphology, contribute to the significantly higher female occurrence of De Quervain disease. [18][19][20] Our anatomical study differs from others as it does not use cadaver data as a source of reference. Instead, our data exclusively represent the evaluation of operative patients who had the first dorsal compartment clinically inspected and released.…”
