The use of habitat by fish is closely related to efforts to find the best conditions for the survival of these fish. This study aims to analyze the habitat preferences of Striped snakehead in Rawa Aopa waters, Southeast Sulawesi. This research was conducted from November 2018 to February 2019 in the waters of Swamp Aopa Southeast Sulawesi. Fish collection using traps. The constancy and fidelity index determined the preference of striped snakehead for habitat type. A total of 1024 striped snakehead fish were caught during the study with a length range of 200,0-420,0 mm and 69,0-596,0 g weight. Striped snakehead measuring 200-367 mm were consistent in occupying habitats with a slightly dense to dense water plant density, while sizes 368-388 and 389-430 mm were consistent in habitats with sparse water plant density. The preference level of striped snakehead fish size 389-430 mm to habitats with rare aquatic plants is very high (Fij = 6). Therefore, the size can be used as an indicator of habitats with the rare aquatic plant category. The preference for 200-367 mm striped snakehead fish in dense aquatic plant habitats indicates that these habitats are foraging, growing, and protective zones. Striped snakehead is one of the important food fish of high commercial value due to preference for its meat quality, therapeutic and antinociceptive properties. The species is distributed in many countries in South Asia to South‐East Asia. The current production of the species is largely contributed from the capture fisheries as there are several inherent problems associated with its farming. The major bottlenecks for aquaculture production are insufficient knowledge on reproductive biology, captive breeding, higher mortalities of larvae in nursing phases, intracohort cannibalism and non‐acceptance of artificial diet. The available information on these issues is sparse, often anecdotal and needs comprehensive up‐scaling. To address this gap, this review compiles the available information on this species to have a better understanding of reproductive biology, captive spawning, larval rearing, cannibalism mitigation, nursery rearing of seed in different rearing systems, and most important being weaning seed on the artificial diet so that this species could be cultured on artificial diets in the grow‐out systems. It is expected that this review would provide useful information for the production of feed‐weaned hatchery‐seed.

Spatial distribution and abundance of Channa striata Bloch1793 in Sempor Reservoir, Kebumen Central Java

Channa striata are one of the essential catches in freshwater, including Sempor Reservoir. This study aimed to investigate the spatial distribution and abundance of Channa striata and the correlation between the abundance of snakehead and water quality parameters. The study was undertaken in Sempor Reservoir Central Java from March to October 2020. The method included a survey with five Stations of sampling. Distribution data were tabulated using the Microsft Excel program. Data of abundance and water quality were subjected to ANOVA. The correlation between the abundance and water quality was analyzed with the Principle Component Analysis (PCA). The result showed that the distribution of snakehead fish in Sempor Reservoir covered a wide range across the inlets, middle, outlets, and beyond the dam. The catch fish was 110-390 mm long and weighed 12-588g. The male and female fish percentage was 55.68% vs 44.32%, so the female to male ratio was 0.8:1. The highest abundance of snakehead fish was in the KW station (33%). The distribution of C.striata was more affected by the fish behaviour in selecting their habitat than the water temperature, depth, and transparency. The significance of this study expects to lay the foundation for snakehead fisheries management in Sempor Reservoir.
