Introductions: For young premenopausal breast cancer patients, adjuvant chemotherapy may cause menstrual disruptions and premature menopause, which may in turn impair their quality of life (QoL). In this study among young breast cancer survivors who have undergone adjuvant chemotherapy, the objectives were to assess posttreatment menopausal symptoms and their associated factors, and to correlate these symptoms with breast cancerspecific QoL.Methods: The study population included premenopausal young Chinese women with early-stage breast cancer who had undergone adjuvant chemotherapy between 3 and 10 years prior to enrolling into this study. At study entry, patients' characteristics and clinical features were collected; each patient had detail menstrual history collected and each filled in MENQOL and FACT-B + 4 questionnaires.Results: Two hundred eighty eligible patients were recruited. For adjuvant chemotherapy, 92% received anthracyclines and 28% received taxanes; 76% received adjuvant tamoxifen. At a median of 5.0 years from initial cancer diagnosis, 49 and 11% had become post-and peri-menopausal respectively. MENQOL at study entry revealed that physical domain score was worse in overweight/obese patients (mean scores for underweight/normal vs overweight/obese: 2.65 vs 2.97, p = 0.0162). Vasomotor domain score was worse in those who received taxanes or tamoxifen (taxane vs non-taxane: 2.91 vs. 2.35, p = 0.0140; tamoxifen vs no tamoxifen: 2.75 vs. 2.34, p = 0.0479). Sexual domain score was worse among those who had become peri/post-menopausal (peri/postmenopausal vs premenopausal: 2.82 vs. 2.29, p = 0.0229). On the other hand, patients who utilized traditional Chinese medicine had significantly worse scores for vasomotor, psychosocial and physical domains. Further, there was a significant association between MENQOL scores and FACT-B + 4 scores; less severe symptoms in the MENQOL domains were associated with better QoL scores in FACT-B + 4 physical, functional, psychosocial and emotional well-being, Breast Cancer Subscale, Arm Subscale and FACT-B total score.

O adoecimento biológico tende a ser intensificado por vieses impostos nos quadrantes psicossociais. As consequências emocionais reverberantes em mulheres acometidas por câncer são recorrentes e necessitam de assistência adequada visando sua reintegração familiar e social, assim como sua adaptação à uma nova realidade. Assim, surge a preocupação quanto os sentimentos que circundam a existências de mulheres diagnosticadas com câncer, uma vez que sua história de vida e seu ambiente psicossocial interferem diretamente em sua reação e enfretamento deste momento. Logo, este trabalho tem por objetivo realizar uma pesquisa de revisão sistemática da literatura dos últimos cinco anos quanto a história, a dor e o sofrimento de mulheres diagnosticadas com câncer. Foi realizada uma busca nas bases de dados da PUBMED e BVS, a partir das palavras-chave (MeSH): “Psychosocial” , “Women” e “Cancer”. Em seguida, os trabalhos foram submetidos ao protocolo PRISMA para revisões sistemáticas. Foram identificados 362 artigos, sendo selecionados apenas 7 na amostra final após aplicação dos critérios de inclusão do protocolo de pesquisa. Os estudos mostraram que as mulheres diante da notícia do diagnóstico se sentem aflitas, comumente recebem apoio da família e buscam algum apoio religioso para lidar com o diagnóstico do câncer de mama. Além disso, os resultados falso-positivos também estão associados a prejuízo psicossocial para as mulheres que experimentam níveis de ansiedade, desânimo, efeitos negativos no sono, no comportamento e na vida sexual semelhantes às pacientes que possuem um diagnóstico verídico.

Background: The continuously increasing survivorship of female breast cancer makes the monitoring and improvement of patients’ quality of life ever so important. While globally there is a growing body of research on health-related quality of life one year after surgical treatment for non-metastatic breast cancer, up-to-date information regarding Greek patients is scarce.Objective: To measure the level of QoL of non-metastatic BC survivors in Greece 1 year after surgery.Methods: A sample of 200 female breast cancer survivors aged 18 to 75, who followed up as outpatients in five public hospitals were included in this cross-sectional study. All recruited patients agreed to participate in the study (100% response rate). Quality of life data were collected through the EORTC QLQ-C30 as well as BR23 questionnaires.Results: Cronbach’s alpha for all scales of the two questionnaires was from 0.551 to 0.936 indicating very good reliability. According to the Multiple Linear Regression, older patients showed a lower future perspective (p= .031), with those living in rural areas, which was associated with more financial difficulties (p= .001). Women with tertiary education and those who had been hospitalized in a university hospital recorded better on global health status (p= .003 and .000 respectively). Patients who underwent chemotherapy reported better scores in the emotional function sub-scale (p= .025). Women with reconstruction and at least one complication appeared to have significantly better scores in future perspective and social function (p= .005, .002 respectively).Conclusions: Breast cancer survivors were found to have an overall good quality of life, functioning/symptoms scores and were satisfied with the provided care.

Abstract: Research has shown that sexual functioning/sexual health are key aspects of quality of life for many cancer survivors, and are often not addressed by health care providers. Future studies should examine how such topics are handled by clinicians in their interactions with survivors.
