Shall I Project a World: Linguistic Evocation of Reality through Connotative Narratives

Abstract

The following paper will discuss the usage of language as a medium to understand and interpret the reality by the individuals. Taking Pynchon's novel, The Crying of Lot 49, as the primary text, the paper will analyse the attempts to understand the reality through three kinds of perception and how they affect the basic daily understanding of the individuals. The basis of these perceptions is derived from Vakyapadiya, the text which forms the basis of Indian grammarian system. Limiting the focus of critical analysis to its first canto only (there are total three cantos), it will analyse the correlation between language and its usage to interpret our immediate reality. Through comparative analysis, the paper will identify the need for interpretation and its acceptance within the society.
