Shape-Based Classification of 3D Facial Data to Support 22q11.2DS Craniofacial Research

Abstract: 3D imaging systems are used to construct high-resolution meshes of patient's heads that can be analyzed by computer algorithms. Our work starts with such 3D head meshes and produces both global and local descriptors of 3D shape. Since these descriptors are numeric feature vectors, they can be used in both classification and quantification of various different abnormalities. In this paper, we define these descriptors, describe our methodology for constructing them from 3D head meshes, and show through a set of … Show more

“…In the literature, the locations of the facial landmarks have been annotated manually [21,22,23] or automatically [2,8,25,26]. In [21], the images need a preprocessing such as manual image standardization including rotation and cropping.…”

“…Besides 2D image analysis, 3D facial morphology modelling has been investigated to assist the diagnosis in dysmorphology [23,24,25,27]. 2D images are sensitive to variations caused by expressions, illumination, pose, occlusions and makeup while 3D data is robust to these variations and can be inspected from any viewpoint.…”
