Shape memory poly (glycerol sebacate)‐based electrospun fiber scaffolds for tissue engineering applications: A review

Abstract: Electrospun fiber scaffolds has made a huge progress in tissue engineering applications owing to their continuous morphology with variable chemical, physical, and biological properties. In this review paper, we reviewed the electrospinning technique, its processing parameters and characterizations involved. A focus on shape memory poly (glycerol sebacate) (PGS)-based electrospun fiber scaffolds for tissue engineering field was explored. The stimuli responsive PGS scaffold has gained much attention due to its a… Show more

“…For example, in poly(3-hydroxybutyrate- co -3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) copolymers, the degradation rate can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of 3-hydroxybutyrate to 3-hydroxyhexanoate monomers in the polymer. 184 Poly(glycerol-sebacate) (PGS) is an aliphatic polyester that has shown significant potential for various applications such as biomedical 185 and environmental 131 applications over the last few years. Generally, it possesses a high hydrolytic degradation rate, limiting its application for biomedical purposes.…”

“…However, PGS was previously reported as a biodegradable material by Nagata et al , in 1990s under the term “Yg10”. PGS has received notable attention from the scientific community, and many studies as well as some reviews have been published on the matter. …”

“…In addition to excellent SME, the core–sheath nanofibers also showed excellent antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria . The usefulness of SMP for the development of self-adjusting tissue engineering implants and a local drug delivery system has been described in the example of poly(ester-urethanes), , copolyesters, , or poly(ester-carbonates) . Henderson and co-workers have recently demonstrated the enzymatic triggering of shape-memory PCL-Pellethane in direct response to the presence of enzyme-secreting human cells …”
