Sharing Distributed and Heterogeneous Resources toward End-to-End 5G Networks: A Comprehensive Survey and a Taxonomy

Abstract: Regardless of the context to which it is applied, sharing resources is well-recognized for its considerable benefits. Since 5G networks will be service-oriented, on-demand, and highly heterogeneous, it is utmost important to approach the design and optimization of the network from an end-to-end perspective. In addition, in order to ensure end-to-end performance, this approach has to entail both wireless and optical domains, altogether with the IoT, edge, and cloud paradigms which are an indispensable part of t… Show more

“…ML takes a crucial responsibility in the classification of different applications, while E2E NS is required to differentiate the behaviors of user devices, RRH, network resources, and media contents [16][17][18][19]. Different media requires different security and QoS obligations to ensure trustful E2E communication and satisfy the QoS requirement; therefore, the slicing of different media contents (e.g., media forensics) is mandatory [20]. 5G/6G edge environments consist of insufficient computing resources; therefore, the lightweight media inspection methods have to be considered.…”

“…Over the year, the number of connected devices (wirelessly and wired) is everincreasing, will reach 13 billion by 2023 [1]. To support these always-connected devices, the demand for high speed, high reliability, low-latency, low-cost, dense connectivity, different types of mobility needs, and heterogeneous connectivity is escalating, which forced the telecommunications industry to enter into a new era of the future communication network (FCN) [2].…”

“…Soua et al [6] and Taleb et al [9] also discuss that this high heterogeneity in services, resources, technologies, and cloud infrastructure induce severe challenges to meet QoS and QoE requirements, and to maintain service continuity. Also, this heterogeneous nature makes the resource allocation [18] and management even more complex. Therefore, there is a need for more sophisticated framework for service and resource management, unifying networking and cloud orchestration [6,9].…”
