Shea Nut Oil Extracts Enhance the Intra-Articular Sodium Hyaluronate Effectiveness on Surgically Induced OA Progression in Rats

Abstract: Osteoarthritis (OA) progression is associated with joint pain and stiffness. Intra-articular hyaluronic acid (IAHA) injection in knee OA restores the viscoelasticity of the joint and prevents cartilage damage. Shea nut oil extract (SNO) was shown to provide chondroprotection on surgically-induced OA progression in rats. Here we aim to examine IAHA injection supplemented with SNO diet for a synergetic evaluation on the disease progression in OA rats. We employed an anterior cruciate ligament transection plus me… Show more

“…OA induction was carried out by following the previous reports [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ]. The animal experiments were conducted according to institutional and international standards of ethics (Principles of Laboratory Animal Care, National Institutes of Health) and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) of Cathay General Hospital (Taipei, Taiwan).…”

“…The stained sections were scanned using a Slide Scanner ZEISS Axio Scan Z1 image system (Jena, Germany). The mean cartilage degeneration score (determined using the modified Osteoarthritis Research Society International scoring system) [ 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 ] and the mean cartilage thickness on the medial tibial plateau were evaluated using ZEN lite 3.2 software (Carl Zeiss Microscopy GmbH, Jena, Germany).…”

“…It is primarily present in the vitreous body of the eye, skin, synovial fluid, and skeletal tissues (L. Hu et al., 2022). Sodium hyaluronate is an intrinsic component within the knee joint and provides viscoelastic properties to synovial fluid (Chen & Wong, 2020). Sodium hyaluronate is an iconic cosmetic active ingredient, owing to its multiple physiological roles in promoting hydration, and improving viscoelasticity and tonicity (Meunier et al., 2022).…”
