“…From the clinical records, most of the respiratory, constitutional, or flu‐like symptoms also took place in September or December, but not in March or June. This may indicate that virus infections in cold seasons are more likely to be symptomatic or these viruses can be more easily coactivated in autumn and winter seasons (2). Further studies are needed to clarify whether these phenomena were worldwide or specific to Taiwan.…”

“…Increased susceptibility to infection is common in uremic patients due to their immunological defects, both in humoral and in cellular components (1). Because asymptomatic reactivation of viruses is not rare in immunocompromised patients, virus culture technique or serological study of viral activity in these patients may be worthwhile to prevent transmission of viruses from unnoticed foci (2). The purpose of this study was to follow the immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody titers to six commonly encountered viruses in hemodialysis patients for a 2 year period to determine whether this group of patients had a different antibody response to viral activity compared to the normal population.…”

“…A discernible cytopathic effect in tissue culture usually develops within 24–48 h of inoculation. However, the simple isolation of HSV‐1 from respiratory secretions does not differentiate between true infection and a carrier state, since asymptomatic shedding does occur, especially in (critically) ill patients [19,36,50,90,91]. To solve this diagnostic problem, quantitative viral culture has been suggested [47], but no studies have evaluated this possibility to date.…”
