Shining new light on the motion of eutectic droplets across surfaces: A PEEM study of PtGe on Ge(110)

Abstract: Thermally stimulated motion of micron-sized eutectic PtGe droplets on Ge(110) has been studied in situ mainly by photoemission electron microscopy, low-energy electron microscopy, and spatially resolved lowenergy electron diffraction. In line with earlier studies of eutectic AuSi, PtSi, AuGe, and PtGe clusters on, respectively, various Si and Ge substrates we find that the motion toward regions at higher temperature is driven by the entropy gain of substrate atoms which become constituents of the droplet durin… Show more

“…Quite minor deviations from circular geometry are attributed to the step architecture, such as step-bunches. 13 The radius of curvature of the spherical cap of the major eutectic droplet (bright objects) amounts to R C = 90 μm, and the wetting angle θ w equals 20°. 12 The volume of the spherical cap is given by …”

“…We conclude that the stabilization of the observed thin Ge 2 Pt{101} film by quantum size effects is a plausible cause for the development of extended thin Ge 2 Pt{101} crystallites upon the solidification of micron-sized droplets when passing the eutectic temperature. With the known wetting angle of 20° before solidification, 13 one can estimate the projected view of a fictive spherical cap as the parent droplet for the flat island in Figure 10 . The result is given by the blue object in Figure 10 .…”
