Danau merupakan hotspot bagi siklus biogeokimia elemen kimia yang menentukan karakteristik kualitas air. Sebagai elemen lanskap berbentuk funnel, danau menerima dan memproses senyawa kimia yang ditransformasi dan diemisi dalam bentuk gas, diendapkan sebagai senyawa organik dan anorganik, atau terbawa ke hilir melalui aliran keluar sehingga keseimbangan kualitas air danau terjaga. Keseimbangan proses biogeokimia dapat terganggu oleh tekanan dari aktivitas antropogenik dan dampak perubahan iklim. Hal ini menyebabkan perubahan pada spesies senyawa kimia dominan dan peningkatan konsentrasi polutan yang tidak diinginkan sehingga kualitas air danau terganggu. Sementara itu, tipologi membedakan karakteristik hidrogeomorfologi dan biogeokimia danau yang merupakan karakteristik spesifik pengendali kualitas air danau. Danau-danau di Indonesia memiliki tipologi morfogenesis ekosistem danau yang berbeda, spesifik, dan unik, baik secara lokal maupun regional. Hal itu tentu membedakan juga pengelolaan terhadap kualitas airnya. Pengelolaan kualitas air danau melalui pendekatan biogeokimia merupakan nature-based solution, solusi terbaik dalam menjaga kualitas air danau untuk mendukung multifungsi ekosistem yang berkelanjutan. Oleh karena itu, pengelolaan kualitas air danau secara berkelanjutan akan mewujudkan ketahanan ekosistem danau yang sehat dan lestari.

Lake Batur, designated as one of the National Priority Lakes in Indonesia, has experienced significant eutrophication in recent years. Waste generated from various anthropogenic activities, including agriculture, domestic, tourism, and floating net fishery (FNF), have collectively contributed to the decline in water quality and the eutrophication status of the lake. Our study aimed to evaluate the current eutrophication status of Lake Batur by analyzing the spatial and temporal variations in nutrient parameters, water transparency and phytoplankton biomass. Then we assessed strategies in controlling eutrophication in the lake using the Driving forces-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) framework. Currently, Lake Batur has reached mesotrophic to hypereutrophic levels. We identified that the main driving forces behind these concerning conditions were the significant increase of agricultural and FNF activities, particularly since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The main environmental pressures showed that agriculture waste was the most dominant nutrient source to the lake (93.05 % of N and 89.96 % of P loads). The state analysis indicated that high nutrient concentrations and subsequent algal growth led to oxygen depletion, resulting in mass mortality of fish, loss of amenity and tourism value, and reduced availability of clean water. Short-term and long-term strategies for effectively managing eutrophication in Lake Batur has been proposed in this study. However, the best scenario will be chosen by considering both eutrophication issue and social implications.

Lake Batur is one of The National Priority Lakes according to President Regulation Number 60/2021 with the target of restoring water quality through the pollution control program for floating net fishery (FNF), agriculture, and other anthropogenic sources around the watershed. The regulation also states several internal measures designed to restore the lake’s water quality. Unfortunately, detailed information on pollution control priorities, the amount that must be controlled for water quality improvements to be visible, and the effectiveness of internal restoration efforts have yet to be obtained. This can hinder the lake restoration process and, furthermore, its sustainable management. This study aimed to develop a web-based numerical model as an open-source web-service for guiding restoration in Lake Batur. It is accessible via the interactive graphical user interface (GUI) running in a standard web browser and includes tools of varying complexity. The platform provides the user with features to set up some parameters, run and analyze the numerical water quality, and the possibility to set up, run and compare various lake management scenarios. The preliminary results show that the model was able to represent existing daily water quality dynamics. Hopefully, the model can be used as a tool for lake restoration and as a part of sustainable lake management.
