Shut-down control with energy feedback and energy dissipation for MMC-HVDC systems

Abstract: SUMMARYThis paper presents a complete shut-down control scheme for modular multilevel converter-based highvoltage direct current (MMC-HVDC) transmission systems for scheduled shut-down scenario. The shutdown control scheme is divided into three parts according to the discharge mechanism: the energy feedback stage, the controllable energy dissipation stage, and the uncontrollable energy dissipation stage. To make the best use of the sub-module (SM) capacitor energy, the SM capacitor voltage is reduced by modify… Show more

“…It is easily seen that the overall area of the proposed system is 93.5% of the MMC-HVDC. [17][18][19][20][21][22] To maintain the completeness of the whole control structure, the capacitor voltage balancing method is introduced in this section. And then, the system control strategies are proposed.…”

“…Generally, the modulation methods can be classified into two kinds: pulse width modulation (PWM) and staircase modulation. Pulse width modulation is based on the control of every submodule capacitor voltages by means of different modulation approaches . Staircase modulation is based on sorting method to control submodule voltages .…”
