Side-chain boron difluoride formazanate polymers via ring-opening metathesis polymerization

Abstract: The synthesis, characterization, and ring-opening methathesis polymerization (ROMP) of a novel norbornene-based boron difluoride (BF2) formazante monomer are described in detail. The polymerization studies confirmed ROMP to occur in the presence of BF2 formazanates, and also demonstrated the controlled nature of the polymerization. The polymers retained many of the unique characteristics of the monomers in dichloromethane, including absorption and emission at maximum wavelengths of 518 and 645 nm, large Stoke'… Show more

“…[1] Recently, considerable interest has arisen in the preparation and application of metal-containing polymers due to the incorporation of both organic and inorganic components. [2] They combine processing advantages of soft polymers and unique functions provided by hard metal centers. Basically, organic polymers provide flexibility, solubility, and processability, while incorporation of metal elements endows multiple functionalities including redox activity, catalytic, magnetic, responsive, and electronic properties.…”

“…85 Polymer 66 retained many of the traits of molecular BF 2 triarylformazanates, including intense absorption in the red region (l max = 518 nm), weak photoluminescence (l PL = 645 nm, F PL = 2.5%) and reversible reduction to its poly(radical anion) form (E red1 = À0.95 V vs. Fc 0/+ ). 84 In an effort to enhance photoluminescence intensity, (co)polymers 67 containing BF 2 3-cyanoformazanate complexes were prepared through variation of the mole fraction ( f BF 2 ) of BF 2 formazanate monomer incorporated. 85 Despite the monomer exhibiting respectable photoluminescence (l PL = 561 nm, F PL = 30%), the photoluminescence intensity of solutions of homopolymer 67 ( f BF 2 = 1) were reduced (l PL = 559 nm, F PL = 11%), likely as a result of ACQ.…”

“…Beide Methoden wurden zur Synthese einer Vielzahl von Bor-haltigen Polymeren mit unterschiedlichen funktionellen Gruppen und Architekturen angewendet. [101] Die Affinitätd er Boran-LA-Einheiten zu Nucleophilen wurde bei der chemischen Sensorik von Ionen und Molekülen genutzt. So kçnnen beispielsweise LA-Organoborpolymere auf Polystyrol(PS)-Basis leicht Addukte mit neutralem Pyri- ( 55).…”
