Significance of dormant forms ofHelicobacter pyloriin ulcerogenesis

Abstract: Nearly half of the global population are carriers of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a Gram-negative bacterium that persists in the healthy human stomach. H. pylori can be a pathogen and causes development of peptic ulcer disease in a certain state of the macroorganism. It is well established that H. pylori infection is the main cause of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease (PUD). Decontamination of the gastric mucosa with various antibiotics leads to H. pylori elimination and longer remission in this d… Show more

“…Previous authors have referred to these forms as the C-shaped and U-shaped forms and they are the precursors to the coccoid form. These C-shaped and U-shaped forms of H. pylori are considered to be bacterial intermediates that favor survival transforming them into an inactive phase (dormancy) [28,29], due to adverse condition, as temperature or pH changes, use of antimicrobial drugs, prolonged fasting when cultivated, deficiency of nutrients, effects of antisecretory drugs, etc. [30].…”

“…Among them, the coccoid form is divided into two subtypes. Type A has irregular edges with a rough surface and is considered to be a dead form, while type B has a smoother surface, is smaller and is considered to be a dormant form . A previous study has confirmed that coccoid H pylori exists in the stomach and duodenum, and the number in the duodenum is higher than that in the stomach.…”

“…The bacterium is, indeed, known to be able to resist harsh environments by changing to a dormant, inactive state, a non-culturable coccoid form that could still be potentially viable, later on, in the stomach (21,22) . It is therefore possible that H. pylori may lay dormant for long periods of time, using the nose and the sinuses as reservoirs, waiting for an eventual return to an active form, either to cause gastric re-infection or to participate in the oral-oral route of transmission.…”
