Silica-Based and Borate-Based, Titania-Containing Bioactive Coatings Characterization: Critical Strain Energy Release Rate, Residual Stresses, Hardness, and Thermal Expansion

Abstract: Silica-based and borate-based glass series, with increasing amounts of TiO2 incorporated, are characterized in terms of their mechanical properties relevant to their use as metallic coating materials. It is observed that borate-based glasses exhibit CTE (Coefficient of Thermal Expansion) closer to the substrate’s (Ti6Al4V) CTE, translating into higher mode I critical strain energy release rates of glasses and compressive residual stresses and strains at the coating/substrate interface, outperforming the silica… Show more

“…The TiO 2 -containing borate-based glasses exhibited significantly superior antibacterial and solubility behaviour in comparison to the silica-based glasses. The effects of partial replacements of SiO 2 in silica-based glasses, or B 2 O 3 in borate-based glasses, by TiO 2 were investigated aiming at adjusting the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the glass coatings to that of Ti6Al4V substrate [198]. A better fit of CTE values was obtained for borate-based glass.…”

“…Thus, 10 6 mechanical cycles were performed to represent 2 years of service. 27,28,29 The release of residual stress may have been responsible for the increase in flexural strength for C1 and C2 aged-groups. 30,31 Future studies should address the quantification of leucite crystals through XRD or similar techniques, and the effects of such crystals on the residual stress after repeated pressings.…”

“…Silica-based and borate-based glasses ( Table 1 ) in this study were previously synthesized, and characterized structurally and mechanically as bulk and coating material [ 45 , 46 ]. TiO 2 was added at the expense of SiO 2 for the SRT series and at the expense of B 2 O 3 for the BRT series.…”
