Silk-based hybrid microfibrous mats as guided bone regeneration membranes

Abstract: LAPONITE® (LAP) nanoplatelets were incorporated within a regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) microfibrous mat via electrospinning, which exhibited better cell adhesion and proliferation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) than the pristine RSF ones.

“…Laponite (Lap, Na 0.7 + [(Mg 5.5 Li 0.3 )Si 8 O 20 (OH) 4 ] 0.7 - ) is one of the clays that can be used to produce these hydrogels [ 8 , 9 ]. This nanoclay is a synthetic smectic with 25–30 nm diameter of and 1 nm thickness [ 10 ]. Lap crystals have positive charges on the edge and negative charges on the top and bottom surfaces [ 10 , 11 , 12 ].…”

“…Functionality for biomedicine has been one of the research focuses for SF. Recently, the literature aimed to investigate SF’s cell adhesion, drug-loading capacity, and osteoinductivity [ 131 , 132 , 133 , 134 , 135 ]. Some materials are usually applied to composite SF in hard tissue engineering to improve the biological properties.…”

“…Bai et al have prepared hydrogels with robust mechanical properties through the combination of dynamic host‐guest interactions in silk hydrogels 19 . Moreover, some researchers have used electrospinning or 3D printing to prepare scaffolds with high porosity for silk fibroin 20–23 . However, the hydrogel lacks the anisotropic microstructure of natural tissues, sometimes it is difficult to provide the physical guidance signals required by tissue cells and the mechanical properties of freeze‐dried pure silk fibroin scaffolds are usually unsatisfactory.…”

[20][21][22][23] However, the hydrogel lacks the anisotropic microstructure of natural tissues, sometimes it is difficult to provide the physical guidance signals required by tissue cells and the mechanical properties of freeze-dried pure silk fibroin scaffolds are usually unsatisfactory. Polyurethane (PU), a traditional chemical product, has been famous for its chemical stability and mechanical properties such as excellent high strength, elasticity and toughness, which can make up for the lack of mechanical properties of silk fibroin.…”
