Silver‐Containing Biomaterials for Biomedical Hard Tissue Implants

Abstract: Bacterial infection caused by biomaterials is a very serious problem in the clinical treatment of implants. The emergence of antibiotic resistance has prompted other antibacterial agents to replace traditional antibiotics. Silver is rapidly developing as an antibacterial candidate material to inhibit bone infections due to its significant advantages such as high antibacterial timeliness, high antibacterial efficiency, and less susceptibility to bacterial resistance. However, silver has strong cytotoxicity, whi… Show more

“…For the orthopedic patients with diabetes mellitus, the use of simple implants is restricted by infection and inflammatory reaction, which affect bone integration. [39] Implant infection caused by MRSA is a catastrophic problem in orthopedic surgery, which not only causes infection and failure of implantation surgery, but also triggers inflammatory reactions that further damage the body. Moreover, the foundation of diabetes will also lead to an inflammatory stress state that limits the integrating performance of implants.…”

“…[194] Silver nanoparticles, for example, have been incorporated into 3D-printed devices, demonstrating their potential ability to prevent bacterial colonization on implant surfaces. [195,196] Additionally, implants that can release antimicrobial agents in a controlled manner have also been developed using this technology. Wound dressings 3D printing assists in producing personalized wound dressings fortified with nanoengineered materials.…”

“…Nevertheless, the considerable cytotoxicity of silver poses a hurdle, as it can induce inflammatory reactions and oxidative stress, leading to the impairment of tissue regeneration. This complex interaction underscores a huge challenge in the use of silver-containing biomaterials [16,17].…”
