Silver Nanoparticles in Blends of Polyethylene and a Superabsorbent Polymer: Morphology and Silver Ion Release

Abstract: Antimicrobial properties of polymer materials are required in many applications. The polyethylene/superabsorbent polymer (PE/SAP) blends containing silver nanoparticles were successfully prepared via thermal reduction during melt mixing. It was found that in situ formed silver nanoparticles are preferentially located at the interface between PE matrix and SAP particles. The expectation was that the low water uptake of the PE will be enhanced by blending with a SAP and thus the silver ion release from the mater… Show more

“…These results are in agreement with those in the literature . According to Logvinenko et al ., an intramolecular reduction of silver ions in smaller metallic particles (Ag + →Ag0) occurs with a release of CO, H 2 0, CO 2 , CH 3 COOH, and small quantities of radicals during the decomposition process.…”

“…These ionic compounds come into contact with the cell wall of microbes and act on their integrity to prevent proliferation . However, the metallic salts are mainly used to generate elementary nanometric particles . These particles are then used as ionic tanks and dispersed in a large variety of materials to obtain an antiseptic effectiveness.…”

Besides, this kind of agent represents a possibility of biocide activity susceptible to resist high thermal solicitations.…”

“…Polymer/nanoparticle composites prepared by this route have been largely studied for hydrogels or other functional polymers, such as thin film systems . However, in nonpolar thermoplastic matrices, such as polyolefins, the in situ synthesis of nanoparticles has been scarce …”
