Simple and Efficient AlN-Based Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters

Abstract: In this work, we demonstrate the simple fabrication process of AlN-based piezoelectric energy harvesters (PEH), which are made of cantilevers consisting of a multilayer ion beam-assisted deposition. The preferentially (001) orientated AlN thin films possess exceptionally high piezoelectric coefficients d33 of (7.33 ± 0.08) pC∙N−1. The fabrication of PEH was completed using just three lithography steps, conventional silicon substrate with full control of the cantilever thickness, in addition to the thickness of… Show more

“…Piezoelectric materials play an important role in a rich variety of sensors, actuators, MEMS, flexible electronics, and energy harvesting. The limitation of conventional three-dimensional (3D) piezoelectric materials, including quartz and AlN, arises due to the brittle nature . Besides, the growing requirement for miniaturized devices calls for low-dimensional piezoelectric materials.…”

“…The choice of piezoelectric material highly depends on its capability to generate high output power. Piezoelectric thin film with high ratios of k 2 /ε or coupling factor, k 2 over dielectric constant, ε has been reported to generate high output power [79][80][81][82][83][84][85]. Table 1 shows the comparison of three possible piezoelectric materials used for the EH application.…”

“…To increase electrical power generation using piezoelectric transducers, various techniques have been investigated such as force focusing and increasing mechanics [ 28 ], resonance up-conversion mechanics [ 29 ], using different piezo materials [ 30 ], using more efficient nonlinear electronics [ 31 ], and adjusting the resonance frequency to make a broadband energy converter [ 32 ]. All these techniques have drawbacks, such as the use of complex mechanics, the limitations of the materials, and the need for bulky buoys that make the whole energy converter complicated and increase the cost of maintenance and deployment.…”
