“…Irrespective of the size of pneumothorax, number of previous episodes, or whether the current condition was considered primary or secondary, needle aspiration would be recommended as an initial treatment for all spontaneous pneumothorax when intervention was necessary (39,40). It had been used widely with its characteristics of easy operation, safety and less pain (41,42). However the issue whether to apply needle aspiration for PSP had still remained controversial after consulting existing literatures.…”

“…It is difficult to compare various reports with different clinical backgrounds, however, our aspiration techniques were consistent, performed by trained pulmonary physicians in one institution and we were able to follow as to what extent the simple aspiration would be successful. Chan and Lam (11) reported that the success rate in patients with larger pneumothorax size (more than 40%) was only 15.4%. We found that the PSP with less than 8 cm of the vertical rim and 50% of the collapsed area ratio achieved significantly better results compared with larger pneumothorax (Fig.…”

“…5 Simple aspiration of a pneumothorax has increasingly being utilized in treating simple pneumothoraces. A recent review of 91 consecutive cases by Chan and Lam 15 has shown that this technique is particularly successful for cases where the pneumothorax size is limited to less than 40% of chest size. Since the commencement of our review emergency room protocol for management of pneumothoraces has been adjusted such that pneumothoraces less than 30% of chest size are initially treated by needle aspiration in the emergency department.…”
