Background: The ripeness of the cervix is of critical importance to the probability of successful labour induction. Aim: To determine the relationship between successful induction of labour and Bishop score. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of all obstetric patients who had induction of labour between January 1 st 2012 and December 31st 2015 was done in Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki. The information obtained from patients' case notes was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics at an alpha level of 0.05 for all statistical tests. Results: During the study period, there were 9548 deliveries; 2.76% (264) was by induction of labour with success rate of 75.4%. The mean age of the women was 28.4 ± 5.8 years; majority where nulliparous (45.45%). The most common indication for induction of labour was postdatism (43.94%). Success of induction of labour was most likely at Bishop score of 8 to 10 (OR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.72-0.84). Induction delivery interval was shortest with use of Foley catheter and misoprostol. Conclusion: Our study has shown that success of induction of labour was most likely at Bishop Score of 8-10. We advocate the use of Foley catheter and misoprostol for cervical ripening especially when there is need to expedite delivery.

The rate of labor induction is steadily increasing and, in industrialized countries, approximately one out of four pregnant women has their labor induced. Induction of labor should be considered when the benefits of prompt vaginal delivery outweigh the maternal and/or fetal risks of waiting for the spontaneous onset of labor. However, this procedure is not free of risks, which include an increase in operative vaginal or caesarean delivery and excessive uterine activity with risk of fetal heart rate abnormalities. A search for “Induction of Labor” retrieves more than 18,000 citations from 1844 to the present day. The aim of this review is to summarize the controversies concerning the indications, the methods, and the tools for evaluating the success of the procedure, with an emphasis on the scientific evidence behind each.

Prediction of the induction to delivery time interval in vaginal dinoprostone-induced labor: a retrospective study in a Chinese tertiary maternity hospital

Objective This study aimed to investigate the potential factors that affect the induction to delivery time interval in women undergoing induction of labor with a controlled-release dinoprostone vaginal insert. Methods Pregnant women who presented for delivery at Hubei Maternal and Child Health Hospital from January 2016 to August 2016 were recruited. Finally, 1265 women who underwent labor induction with a vaginal dinoprostone (PGE2) insert were analyzed. Univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses were used to estimate the relevant risks for delivery time. Results Among the1265 subjects, the mean delivery time was 18.92 ± 12.50 hours. Univariate and multivariate analyses showed that fetal weight, an obstetric complication (premature rupture of the membranes), and the delivery history were significantly associated with the induction to delivery time. Biparietal diameter was related to the vaginal delivery time in univariate analysis, but there was no significant difference after adjustment in multivariate analysis. Conclusions Vaginal dinoprostone is an effective method for successful induction of labor. Gestational age, parity, and fetal weight are major factors that predict the induction to delivery time interval.
