Simplified technique for the measurements of Re-Os isotope by multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS)

Abstract: A method for the rapid determination of Re-Os isotopes by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) was developed. For Os measurements, samples were introduced into the plasma through conventional solution mode. The main Os memory occurs in the nebulizer; therefore, the use of a glass nebulizer rather than a Teflon nebulizer leads to a significant reduction in the Os memory effect. The Os memory is quickly and easily eliminated by washing the inlet system with 5% HCl-EtOH. The ex… Show more

“…Os was loaded onto Pt filaments and measured as OsO 3 − ions by negative-thermal ionization mass spectrometry (N-TIMS) using the electron multiplier mode on a Thermo-Finnigan Triton (Creaser et al, 1991;Volkening et al, 1991) Os value of 0.1202 ± 3 (2 SD, n = 12) for the period of analysis. These values are in good agreement with a value of 0.12022 ± 2 (2 SD, n = 14) measured on the same mass spectrometer in Faraday cup mode (Li et al, 2010).…”

“…Three analyses on NISTSRM981 during ; (b) Cenozoic basalts and sample locations in Zhejiang Province, modified after Liu et al (2012b), and the whole-rock Ar-Ar age data come from Ho et al (2003); (c) East-west vertical cross section of P-wave velocity tomography along 29°N, indicating high and low-velocity zones beneath Zhejiang Province. The figure is slightly modified from Huang and Zhao (2006 Bulk-rock Re-Os isotopes were analyzed at the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (GIGCAS), following the analytical procedures described by (Li et al, 2010). An ICP-MS (ThermoScientific Xseries-2) was used for isotope dilution analysis of Re.…”
