Simulating Lane-changing Dynamics towards Lane-flow Equilibrium Based on Multi-lane First Order Traffic Flow Model

Abstract: It is well known that under the condition of high traffic volume lane-flow distribution becomes unbalanced; more traffic tends to use a median lane rather than a middle and outer lane, which causes the deterioration of traffic capacity at bottleneck sections. As intensive development of ITS, active and dynamic lane management has been practically implemented. By employing the technology of ITS, balancing lane-flow distribution is one of the feasible solutions to increase the throughput of bottleneck flow. Howe… Show more

“…Sulejic et al (2017) proposed an algorithm to optimize the distribution of lane-changing, which evaluated the optimized lane transformation using the microscopic simulation of the weaving segments of the one-sided motorized lane and introduced the problem of lane-changing in the weaving segments. Shiomi et al (2015) developed a multi-lane first-order traffic flow model to represent the dynamics of lane changes and to balance the traffic flow allocation to improve the traffic throughput of bottleneck segments. Gong and Du (2016) proposed a lane change warning model to solve the lack of optimal positioning of the existing technology.…”

“…The issue of modelling and simulation of the lane-change manoeuvre is dealt with in many scientific publications, both those where the road traffic is discussed "at the macro level" (e.g. [1]), where the analysis is chiefly dedicated to the vehicle flow, and those where the processes of lateral dynamics of the vehicle steered are described in great detail "at the micro level" (e.g. [2]).…”
