Simulation and applications of a novel modified SBR system for biological nutrient removal

Abstract: Dynamic simulation and applications of a novel, continuous-fed, constant level modified sequencing batch reactor for biological nutrient removal are presented. The underlying mathematical model and practical applications of the simulation are discussed. Case studies are presented to illustrate the applications as well as the flexibility of the system in meeting different wastewater treatment requirements. Operation experience from full-scale wastewater treatment plant demonstrates the reliability, ease of oper… Show more

“…Several types of hybrid or modified SBR configurations exist that combine the advantages of continuous influent/effluent flow and constant liquid level of a CAS system with the properties of flexibility and compactness of SBRs (Wu et al, 2001), for example the UNITANK ® approach. This system consists of a tank divided into three equal-volume compartments ('1', '2' and '3') each equipped with aeration and mixing.…”

“…This model, which was established according the correlation of ammonia load and aeration time, linked a three layer settler model in order to optimize aeration period time and to reduce the energy consumption. Some modified or simplified ASM models were applied in modified SBR processes, e.g., UNITANK [28], cyclic activated sludge system (CASS) [29], and modified sequencing batch reactor (MSBR) [30].…”
